What the Nomads of the Moroccan Sahara Are Like

The nomads of the Moroccan Sahara have maintained a lifestyle based on constant mobility for centuries, moving in search of pastures and resources for their animals. These groups live in tents known as “jaimas,” structures designed for nomadic life, mainly built with camel hair or sheep wool, ideal materials for their durability and ease of assembly and disassembly. Their traditional economy has focused on livestock breeding, mainly camels, goats, and sheep. From these animals, they obtain vital resources such as milk, meat, and wool, essential for their subsistence. Adaptation to the arid desert climate is also reflected in their clothing: men usually wear turbans, which protect them from the sun and sandstorms, while women prefer long tunics, suitable for the heat and mobility. Sahrawi nomadic culture is characterized by a rich oral and musical tradition, where stories, legends, and music play a central role in preserving their identity and heritage. They speak Berber and Arabic dialects, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the region. However, in recent decades, many nomads of the Moroccan Sahara have experienced significant changes in their way of life. Modern factors, such as urban development and changes in the natural environment, have led many to settle in more urbanized areas. This change has created a balance between preserving their ancestral traditions and adapting to new socio-economic realities.
