diversity of landscapes in Morocco, from the green mountains of the north to the sandy dunes of the Sahara desert in the south.

Morocco, a country of contrasts, offers a journey through landscapes that dramatically vary from north to south. In the north, the Rif Mountain Range presents a mountainous and wooded terrain, contrasting with the beaches and Mediterranean climate of cities like Tangier and Tetouan. This region is rich in cultural influences, especially from Spain, and features architectural gems like Chefchaouen, known for its picturesque blue buildings.

On the other hand, southern Morocco is a world apart, dominated by the vast and enigmatic Sahara Desert with its imposing dunes and oases. The Atlas Mountains also traverse this region, featuring more arid landscapes and rocky mountains, home to the imposing Mount Toubkal. Additionally, the south is home to valleys and gorges of unique natural beauty, such as the Todra Gorges and the Draa Valley, famous for their desert landscapes and palm groves.

Culturally, while the north is marked by Spanish and Arab influences, the south resonates with the rich heritage of Berber culture, evident in its ancient kasbahs, villages, and traditions that have endured for centuries. From the green exuberance and cultural mix of the north to the stunning deserts, rocky mountains, and deep Berber heritage of the south, Morocco offers a geographical and cultural diversity that makes it a fascinating and unique destination.

8 DAYS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH OF MOROCCO

DAY 1: TANGIER - TETOUAN - CHEFCHAOUEN

In this fascinating ‘Wonders of Morocco’ tour, which spans 8 days, we begin our services at the same port or airport of Tangier. There, our attentive Spanish-speaking driver awaits you, ready to accompany you in a private vehicle throughout the entire journey. After a warm meeting, we leave behind Tangier, a city strategically located at the Strait of Gibraltar, and embark on the journey south together. If the arrival time of your flight or ferry allows, we make our first stop in Tetouan. This amazing city is home to a UNESCO World Heritage medina, admired for its beauty and its past as the capital of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco, which has left a palpable influence on its architecture and culture. Furthermore, if you are a fan of “The Time in Between”, you will recognize the settings that Sira Quiroga traversed during the plot. Whether or not we visit Tetouan, we spend the afternoon of this first day discovering Chaouen, also known as Chefchaouen, famous for being the ‘blue city’ due to the distinctive colour of its houses. Located in the Rif Mountains, strolling through its winding and steep streets becomes a highly pleasant experience. Its kasbah and panoramic viewpoints add a special touch to our visit before we retire for the night in a charming riad.

DAY 2: CHAOUEN – VOLUBILIS – MEKNES – FEZ

The second stage of our exciting journey begins with a delicious breakfast in the charming riad of Chaouen. From there, we continue our journey south together. Our first stop takes you to the amazing archaeological complex of Volubilis, a city erected by the Romans when this region was part of the province of Mauretania Tingitana. This site, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, safeguards treasures of incalculable value. Among them, the majestic Temple of Jupiter, the imposing Arch of Caracalla, and the dazzling mosaics that adorned the stately mansions stand out. The visit to Volubilis can be guided or enjoyed at your own pace, according to your preferences. A short distance from Volubilis, we discover another gem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Meknes. Its historic medina still preserves impressive buildings from its golden age in the 17th and 18th centuries, a period during which Sultan Moulay Ismail transformed it into the capital of the kingdom. The imposing Bab Mansur Gate and the Ismail Mausoleum are just some of the wonders that will captivate you. After exploring Meknes, we continue our route to Fez. This Imperial City, whose medina has also been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, warrants a full day of exploration. Therefore, on this day, you will have free time to wander through its labyrinthine alleys before retiring to rest and spend the night in a charming riad in the heart of the medina.

DAY 3: THE VISIT OF FEZ

We begin our day after a revitalising breakfast in the charming riad, filling ourselves with energy to delve into Fez, the city considered the “cultural and religious capital” of Morocco. Our experienced official local guide accompanies us on a fascinating guided tour of this historic gem. Our itinerary might include visits to prestigious madrasas or Quranic schools, such as the impressive Bou Inania Madrasa, as well as the iconic Karaouine Mosque and the beautiful Nejjarine Fountain. Additionally, we together traverse the bustling neighbourhoods of the medina, exploring places like the tanneries, where the ancient art of dyeing leather is practised. If time permits, we will stroll through the Mellah and its surroundings, where the spectacular golden gates of the Royal Palace stand out. In the afternoon, you have free time to deepen your explorations or shop at your leisure, taking advantage of the fact that Fez’s craftsmanship is widely recognised throughout the country. In the evening, we return to the comfort and tranquillity of our riad located in the heart of the medina, to rest and recharge before continuing our adventure.

DAY 4: FEZ – IFRANE – AZROU – MONKEY FOREST – ERFOUD – MERZOUGA DESERT

After enjoying an exquisite breakfast in the charming riad of Fez, we embark together on an unforgettable adventure to the coveted Sahara desert. Throughout this journey, we will witness fascinating landscapes and localities that will invite us to stop, capture the beauty in photographs, and explore their treasures up close. Our first stop takes us to Ifrane, known as the “Moroccan Switzerland”, where its picturesque gable-roofed buildings create a fairy tale-like setting. In winter, this city dresses in white, being situated at an altitude of 1,713 metres above sea level, nestled in the heart of the majestic Middle Atlas. As we progress, the landscape becomes greener and more lush, as we will experience in the Cedar National Park, located between Ifrane and Azrou. This natural sanctuary, also known as the ‘Monkey Park’, is home to the endangered Barbary monkey population. Crossing the imposing Middle Atlas, we will be welcomed by the Ziz Valley, which will lead us to Erfoud, a city famous for its richness in fossils and marble quarries, thus marking the entrance to the vast desert. Soon, we will arrive at our last stop, Merzouga, where we will begin a camel trek (which can also be replaced by 4×4 vehicles). Riding these majestic animals, we will head towards the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes, where we will witness the magical glow of the sunset over the golden landscape. Our camel ride will finally lead us to our jaima camp in the heart of the desert. There, we will be welcomed with a warm Berber tea as a gesture of hospitality. We will enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under the immense starry sky, offering us unparalleled beauty. And after a day full of adventures, we will retire to the interior of authentic Berber tents to spend a night in complete communion with the tranquility of the desert.

DAY 5: MERZOUGA - KHAMLIA VILLAGE - NOMADS - MERZOUGA DESERT

On this extraordinary day of our journey, we immerse ourselves together in a series of experiences that will resonate deeply within us, leaving an indelible mark on our memory. We begin the day with an impressive spectacle: the sunrise over the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes. This phenomenon is a true visual gift, where light and shadows intertwine in reverent silence. It is a truly unique experience, hardly matchable in any other corner of the world. Once the sun has greeted the new day with its warm light, we enjoy an exquisite breakfast in our jaima camp. Then, we head towards Khamlia, also known as “the village of the blacks”. In this charming village, we immerse ourselves in an ancient tradition: Gnawa music, performed by descendants of Sudanese slaves who were brought to this land centuries ago. In their blood flows the rhythms of percussion and the essence of a tribal music that has been honoured with the prestigious title of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity awarded by UNESCO. We understand the importance of this recognition when we witness one of their captivating live performances. After this enriching experience, we board our robust off-road vehicles to explore the intricate desert routes that in the past challenged the brave runners of the Paris-Dakar rally. Along this exciting journey, we cross old French and Berber villages, as well as ancient kohl mines that in the past provided the precious raw material for the cosmetics industry. We stop at a strategic and elevated point from where we can contemplate the immensity of the Erg Chebbi dunes, a truly impressive landscape. We also take time to visit a desert nomad community that, although in the process of settlement, retains the traditions and customs of their ancestors. We maintain an enriching exchange with them, learning about their lifestyle in such an inhospitable environment. At the end of this day full of wonders, we return to our riad, carrying with us the magic and beauty of the experiences we have shared in the Sahara desert.

DAY 6: MERZOUGA DESERT – TODRA GORGES – DADES VALLEY

On this magical day of the unforgettable ‘Morocco from North to South’ tour, the experience of waking up takes on a truly charming character. Waking up early to witness the first lights of dawn on the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes is a privilege we do not want to overlook. After enjoying an exquisite breakfast in the riad, we begin our return to Merzouga on camelback, immersing ourselves in the serenity of the desert. Then, we indulge in the luxury of a refreshing shower, either in our cosy camp or in a luxurious hotel, depending on your package choice. Our private vehicle takes us back on the road, guiding us to surprising places that reveal the true essence of Morocco. Our first stop leads us to Rissani, a charming desert city that still retains a fascinating historic medina and corners that seem to have been trapped in time, like its peculiar donkey parking lot. Continuing our road trip, we arrive at Tinghir or Tinerhir, whose name in the Tamazight language means “mountain city”, referring to the imposing rock formations that surround it. Our next stop brings us before a true natural spectacle: the Todra Gorges, located a short distance from here. This dazzling canyon, sculpted in the rock by erosion, offers us impressive vertical walls that reach up to 200 metres in height in some sections, creating unforgettable views both from the road and on foot. After this unique experience, we continue our route through the Dades Valley and immerse ourselves in the famous Route of the Thousand Kasbahs. In one of the picturesque villages of the region, you will find our cosy riad, where you will enjoy an exquisite dinner and spend the night in a charming, history-filled environment.

DAY 7: DADES VALLEY – VALLEY OF THE ROSES – OUARZAZATE – AIT BEN HADDOU – HIGH ATLAS – MARRAKECH

After enjoying a delicious breakfast in the riad in the Dades Valley, we board our vehicle to embark on a journey through kilometres of spectacular natural landscape, with a special stop in the nearby Valley of the Roses. Our first major stop takes us to Ouarzazate, where we will visit the impressive Taourirt kasbah. This Berber fortress, which once was the residence of the ‘Pasha’ of Marrakech, still retains elements that transport us to the grandeur and importance of its construction in the past. A little further on, we encounter another renowned fortified enclave: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This site, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also known for being the setting for famous films and series, such as Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. It stands before us as an impressive walled village that captivates any visitor with its panoramic views from the outside and the modest houses and shops that still exist inside. After marvelling at this unique gem, we continue our road trip and cross the majestic High Atlas Mountains, ascending the Tizi n’ Tichka pass, which is over 2,200 metres above sea level. On the ascent and descent, we are surprised by the picturesque local villages and panoramic views, especially when the peaks are covered with snow during the coldest time of the year. In the afternoon, we finally arrive in Marrakech, a spectacular Imperial City that we will explore at leisure the next day. For now, you have free time for a first encounter with its narrow streets and lively life, and then you will enjoy your accommodation in a charming riad in the heart of the medina.

DAY 8: MARRAKECH - AIRPORT

An unforgettable week-long trip through Morocco reserves a full day to explore Marrakech, a city declared a World Heritage Site. After enjoying an exquisite breakfast in the riad, a unique experience awaits us: an official guide joins our group to take us on a fascinating tour of the treasures of this Imperial City. This guided tour immerses us in the rich history of Marrakech, which has been the capital since the 11th century, under the Almoravid dynasty, and later under the Saadian rule. In addition to exploring impressive historical monuments, we will also have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the streets and local markets. Some of the highlights you won’t want to miss include the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, the opulent Bahia Palace, the enigmatic Ben Youssef Madrasa, and the lively Jemaa el-Fna Square. At the agreed time, our driver will pick us up to transfer us by private vehicle to the airport. At that moment, we will end this week-long tour of Morocco and bid farewell, hoping to have created an unforgettable trip through a special and welcoming country.
