Chefchaouen: A Blue Dream Among Mountains that Elevates the Spirit and Delights the Eye

Chefchaouen, known as “the blue city” of Morocco, is famous for its buildings bathed in shades of blue. This tradition is said to have started to reflect the sky, bringing inhabitants closer to God, while others believe it was influenced by Jewish refugees who arrived in the 1930s, as blue is a significant color in Judaism. Additionally, blue could help keep houses cool during the summer heat and possibly repel mosquitoes. However, over time, this characteristic blue hue became a major tourist attraction, becoming an integral part of Chefchaouen’s identity. Beyond the blue, Chefchaouen is a visual delight in many other aspects. Its streets are dotted with flowers, offering vibrant contrasts against the dominant blue. Colorful pots, flowers in shades of pink, orange, and purple, and green climbing plants adorn the facades of houses, balconies, and stairs. These flowers and plants add an additional dimension to the urban landscape, creating a mosaic of colors that complements the predominant blue. Additionally, the city’s souk or market is a hive of colors and activities. Here, visitors can find a variety of textiles, spices, ceramics, and crafts, each with its own unique colors and patterns. All this, along with the charm of its narrow streets and traditional architecture, makes Chefchaouen one of the most picturesque and memorable cities in Morocco.
